He is one of the biggest stars of Egyptian song and film. When he performed scantily clad at the Coachella festival in California, some believed he was now a follower of woke culture. But instead, he persists in promoting a macho culture that is, in reality, the hallmark of the Egyptian regime.
"Mohamed Ramadan sparks controversy with inappropriate attire at Coachella festival in California," headlined the Egyptian daily Al-Shourouk on Monday, April 14 , the day after the Egyptian pop star performed at the popular festival.
“He appeared in concert wearing a short shirt […] with most of his body naked, which sparked a wave of disapproval,” the newspaper states. Especially since “these clothes resembled women’s clothing.”
In fact, "many Egyptians and Arabs called them bras," the BBC Arabic website points out . The outcry was so great that the Egyptian artists' union promised to take action against Mohamed Ramadan, a frequent source of controversy.
Similarly, Mokhtar Gomaa, former Egyptian Minister of Religious Affairs, "warned," without directly naming the singer, against "any manifestation of obscenity, lasciviousness, transvestism, contrary to our values and our identity which reject any form of debauchery and [homosexual] deviance," reports the Egyptian daily Akhbar Al-Yom .
